69. *** 1/2 A Rashomon war film set in the gulf war. While the film doesn't dig deep as one would hope, it's offset by good performances, a touching (if a little whitewashed) ending, and great battle sequences. One of Zwick's best of his many good war movies.

67. *** 1/2 John Ford's best war film, devoid of the cheesy theatrics of most of his other war films. Very nuanced, old fashioned film with Ford's humanism and craft of the film strong points. Although I could very well not do with the romantic subplot.

65. *** 1/2 Spielberg's visual driven coming of age war film may be sometimes melodramatic at times, but it's one of Spielberg's least successful efforts that deserves more attention. Tons of memorable scenes here, especially the spine tingling "Cadlliac of the sky" scene. Still can't believe I'm watching Christian Bale.

63. *** 1/2 Compelling, offbeat bootcamp film deals with the boredom and has scenes that you'lve probably never seen before, rare for a war film. Interesting the whole way.

61. *** 1/2 The film is diminished a bit by it's propagandist tone. However, despite that it's a dazzling good historical war film, especially for it's time, and the battle of the ice is still a milestone of film making. It's also a triumph of filmmaking as well, and visually stunning.

With Subtly, beautiful beautiful subtly in it's character, which adds nuance and life and a layer to the film that makes it very natural and human.

51. **** Set in the Napoelic War. A day to day look at naval warfare and the people involved, though this is no ordinary voyage. Not quite an adventure, the film almost reminds me of Das Boot, although not that bleak. Great film. Forget Pirates of the Carribean, this is the real deal.

49. **** Essential Kurosawa. Shakespeare's Macbeth is mixed with a tale of rivalry, more of the Samurai, and well, you figure it out. Dank and slightly scary, but compelling either way.

45. China's answer to Tae Guk Gi and Saving Private Ryan does what the two do so well to the troops of their country. Trust me, see it, it's very unsung, but a great film. The battle scenes are insanely kinetic and noteworthy, and better than Tae Guk Gi as a matter of fact. Not quite as good dramatically, but that's not really an insult anyway.

43. **** Gritty realistic and convincing look at Vietnam, stripped down film focuses on the battle to great effect. Not quite groundbreaking, but not stale either. It's another great gritty war film about the Vietnam war, minus the heavily fictional elements of the other Nam films.

41. **** It's takes certain templates of Ryan and applies it to the Korean War, but it's story and themes are much different. This examines the Korean War, not WW2. Either way though, it's a very powerful glimpse, occasionally melodramatic, but it doesn't stain the movie.

39. **** The best replay of the Battle of the Bulge, Battleground benefits from historical accuracy, starkness, and a great script with authentic dialogue that elevates the characters and situations out of mediocrity. A little limited in its power sometimes, but still a great film that blows every other combat war movie made during the 40's out of the water.

37. **** Much better than Pearl Harbor, The documentary like film accurately and fairly portrays the bombing. Like The Longest Day, it's a classic battle focused film that is grand in scope and production, and very compelling.

35. **** One hell of a cast in a fine war epic about The failed Operation Market Garden. The same type of grand scale and depiction of the battle like the Longest Day, all about the battle, with fine production values and all. Not quite as good as the Longest Day, but very, very good. Weak point is the music which was a bit too patriotic, but that's a minor gripe.

33. **** Buster Keaton sure had some balls making this. These are some crazy stunts! Either way, the silent film stock is perfect for this civil war tale about a train being stolen by Union spies. Takes some patience, but it's great when you warm up to it.
