By an Amazon.com customer
Starship Troopers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]Starship Troopers (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.53
70. *** 1/2 Military/war science fiction satire says nothing to little new about war, but it's still al ot of fun from the not so subtle Verhoeven. Hey, at least it's better than Showgirls.
Courage Under Fire [Blu-ray]Courage Under Fire [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.29
69. *** 1/2 A Rashomon war film set in the gulf war. While the film doesn't dig deep as one would hope, it's offset by good performances, a touching (if a little whitewashed) ending, and great battle sequences. One of Zwick's best of his many good war movies.
The Desert RatsThe Desert Rats
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.00
68. *** 1/2 Surprisingly good for a old school combat film! Nothing too great, but formidable, short, to the punch, and not too dated. Good film!
They Were ExpendableThey Were Expendable by John Wayne
Buy new: $6.53 / Used from: $3.38
67. *** 1/2 John Ford's best war film, devoid of the cheesy theatrics of most of his other war films. Very nuanced, old fashioned film with Ford's humanism and craft of the film strong points. Although I could very well not do with the romantic subplot.
Gods & GeneralsGods & Generals
Buy new: $3.49 / Used from: $0.93
66. *** 1/2 Better than Gettysburg, this very strong prequel is shorter, plods less, better battle sequences is less tinny, and feels more like a feature film. Underrated as hell, too (16% on Rotten Tomatoes, F***).
Empire of the Sun (Snap Case Packaging)Empire of the Sun (Snap Case Packaging)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.60
65. *** 1/2 Spielberg's visual driven coming of age war film may be sometimes melodramatic at times, but it's one of Spielberg's least successful efforts that deserves more attention. Tons of memorable scenes here, especially the spine tingling "Cadlliac of the sky" scene. Still can't believe I'm watching Christian Bale.
Kelly's HeroesKelly's Heroes
Buy new: $5.48 / Used from: $2.19
64. *** 1/2 The characters are humor are somewhat weak, but great action, great feel, and fun plot more than make up for this. It looks nice too, not overly glossy. Entertaining! Great theme to boot!
Jarhead [Blu-ray]Jarhead [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $7.66 / Used from: $3.50
63. *** 1/2 Compelling, offbeat bootcamp film deals with the boredom and has scenes that you'lve probably never seen before, rare for a war film. Interesting the whole way.
Joyeux Noel (Widescreen)Joyeux Noel (Widescreen)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.48
62. *** 1/2 Now I know what movie I'm watching for Christmas every year. Great visuals and a positive humanistic story, goes right with Xmas with the type of emotions in it.
Alexander NevskyAlexander Nevsky
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $9.55
61. *** 1/2 The film is diminished a bit by it's propagandist tone. However, despite that it's a dazzling good historical war film, especially for it's time, and the battle of the ice is still a milestone of film making. It's also a triumph of filmmaking as well, and visually stunning.
A Very Long EngagementA Very Long Engagement by Sebastien Japrisot
Buy new: $12.19 / Used from: $1.29
60. **** A romance war film that's actually good? You bet. The director and star of Amelie reunite for this breathtaking (visually), visually stunning war romance film, far from vanilla and very engaging. As every bit as unique as Amelie.
Ballad of a Soldier (The Criterion Collection)Ballad of a Soldier (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $18.71 / Used from: $13.12
59. **** Great and touching film about a soldier who gets a ticket home to see his mother, and gets into some heartfelt encounters. A simple, yet poignant war drama. With Subtly, beautiful beautiful subtly in it's character, which adds nuance and life and a layer to the film that makes it very natural and human.
The Desert FoxThe Desert Fox
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.48
58. **** Great biopic on Rommel, it portrays as having some humanity, like many Nazi's had. Goes behind the SS and exposes it, like I think they should. Not for right wing flag waving mouth breathers, but it's a great film about an interesting person.
Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.73 / Used from: $8.46
57. **** This was a propaganda piece? Huh. While I see why it can be called that, Gary Cooper brings the Alvin York to life in this very well done and memorable, clean look at York himself. Infinitely more memorable and easily the best war movie from the early 40's/late 30's, in the leui of all the forgettable crap that came out at that time.
The Patriot (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray]The Patriot (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.55
56. **** A definite film about The Revolutionary War this isn't. However, it's beautifully filmed, and emotional, even stirring, a very rousing film. Roland Emmerich knows how to create extremely enjoyable schlock for sure.
Casablanca [Blu-ray]Casablanca [Blu-ray]
Buy used from: $48.00
55. **** Hello? It's Casablanca! Not much else to say here, and yes it counts.
Lawrence of ArabiaLawrence of Arabia
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $3.00
54. **** Great biopic, but more admiration than enjoyment. Sorry, but not the ballyhoo masterpiece some people make it out to be.
The Battle of Algiers (The Criterion Collection)The Battle of Algiers (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $29.66 / Used from: $18.99
53. **** Unbiased film about the Battle of Algiers, shot in a documentary style, deliciously low budget. An objective film that let's you judge the material subjectively and apply your own opinions to war, which is just a great idea. ALso spoken about the film is the relevance it has today, which is also a plus.
Where Eagles DareWhere Eagles Dare
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.72
52. **** Intricate Eastwood WW2 spy film may not have the best sound design in the world, but it's cliffhanger action sequences really do justice to such a promising plot in principle. Some of the scenes were an inspiration for Inglourious Basterds.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [Blu-ray]Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $7.93
51. **** Set in the Napoelic War. A day to day look at naval warfare and the people involved, though this is no ordinary voyage. Not quite an adventure, the film almost reminds me of Das Boot, although not that bleak. Great film. Forget Pirates of the Carribean, this is the real deal.
Open CityOpen City
Buy used from: $15.20
50. **** A film about the Resistance of Italy, a landmark neo-realistic war film. Slightly dated, but Rosselini's documentary style and interesting subject matter are the real stars here. Watch it!
Throne of Blood (The Criterion Collection)Throne of Blood (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $34.89 / Used from: $20.74
49. **** Essential Kurosawa. Shakespeare's Macbeth is mixed with a tale of rivalry, more of the Samurai, and well, you figure it out. Dank and slightly scary, but compelling either way.
Germany Year ZeroGermany Year Zero
Buy new: $24.60 / Used from: $9.55
48. **** The third film in Rossellini's war trilogy. One of the best films about the war from the German perspective, as it focuses on the poor citizens who endured so. Actually shot during 1945 at Berlin. Can't get more insightful and realistic feeling than this.
TigerlandTigerland
Buy new: $8.73 / Used from: $0.01
47. **** Gripping and gritty war film about a rebellious comrade who outsmarts the system. Great low budget feel is a far cry from Schumacher's horrid Batman films.
Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut (Four-Disc Special Edition)Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut (Four-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.09
46. **** It has a non relevant personal edge to it, but this gorgeous, breathtaking take on the Crusades trounces, say, Braveheart in every way. Great epic battle scenes, and the movie has an ethereal, visually stunning edge that's hard to beat.
Assembly [Blu-ray]Assembly [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.06 / Used from: $17.43
45. China's answer to Tae Guk Gi and Saving Private Ryan does what the two do so well to the troops of their country. Trust me, see it, it's very unsung, but a great film. The battle scenes are insanely kinetic and noteworthy, and better than Tae Guk Gi as a matter of fact. Not quite as good dramatically, but that's not really an insult anyway.
Twelve O'Clock HighTwelve O'Clock High
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.82
44. **** One classic war film that holds up. Gregory Peck is excellent at depicting a great Captain.
Hamburger Hill (20th Anniversary Edition)Hamburger Hill (20th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.05
43. **** Gritty realistic and convincing look at Vietnam, stripped down film focuses on the battle to great effect. Not quite groundbreaking, but not stale either. It's another great gritty war film about the Vietnam war, minus the heavily fictional elements of the other Nam films.
Waltz With BashirWaltz With Bashir
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.99
42. **** Unique and astonishing visually, this documentary/animation is gripping, visually stunning, and very real. Personally, I think this format should be used a lot more to capture the horrors of war from the people who were actually there.
Tae Guk Gi - The Brotherhood of WarTae Guk Gi - The Brotherhood of War
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.54
41. **** It's takes certain templates of Ryan and applies it to the Korean War, but it's story and themes are much different. This examines the Korean War, not WW2. Either way though, it's a very powerful glimpse, occasionally melodramatic, but it doesn't stain the movie.
The Best Years of Our LivesThe Best Years of Our Lives
Buy new: $17.97 / Used from: $10.91
40. **** Great and touching depiction of three veterans who struggle to adjust to Postwar WW2. Filled with insights with this period, as well as superb direction from William Wyler. Bless Harold Russel for his performance. A great coming home type of film that rivals the Deer Hunter.
BattlegroundBattleground
Buy new: $9.73 / Used from: $5.45
39. **** The best replay of the Battle of the Bulge, Battleground benefits from historical accuracy, starkness, and a great script with authentic dialogue that elevates the characters and situations out of mediocrity. A little limited in its power sometimes, but still a great film that blows every other combat war movie made during the 40's out of the water.
StalingradStalingrad
Buy used from: $14.99
38. **** Gritty and painful WW2 anti-war film about the battle of Stalingrad. It's visually gritty and captures all of the grim and grittiness of the battle. Best of all, it's a valuable film being a film about the German side (The SS, no less), executed with terror and gripping reality.
Tora! Tora! Tora! (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Tora! Tora! Tora! (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.96
37. **** Much better than Pearl Harbor, The documentary like film accurately and fairly portrays the bombing. Like The Longest Day, it's a classic battle focused film that is grand in scope and production, and very compelling.
Glory [Blu-ray]Glory [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $15.62 / Used from: $5.58
36. **** The best Civil war film made, with emotion, energy, beautiful direction, an inspiring story, and a compassionate look at the men of the Civil War that doesn't engage in present-ism.
A Bridge Too Far [Blu-ray]A Bridge Too Far [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.79
35. **** One hell of a cast in a fine war epic about The failed Operation Market Garden. The same type of grand scale and depiction of the battle like the Longest Day, all about the battle, with fine production values and all. Not quite as good as the Longest Day, but very, very good. Weak point is the music which was a bit too patriotic, but that's a minor gripe.
Born on the Fourth of July (Special Edition)Born on the Fourth of July (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.22
34. **** Emotional, searing biopic about the life on Ron Kovic. Cruise gives the best performance I've ever seen, and Stone's direction is great as well. Sure, you good nitpick some agendas, but maybe I honestly don't see anything.
The General [Blu-ray]The General [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $21.97
33. **** Buster Keaton sure had some balls making this. These are some crazy stunts! Either way, the silent film stock is perfect for this civil war tale about a train being stolen by Union spies. Takes some patience, but it's great when you warm up to it.
Kagemusha (The Criterion Collection)Kagemusha (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $12.99
32. **** Almost like The Last Samurai, only good and meticulously crafted to perfection, yet again. Draws the parallels between modern tactics and older tactics, but most of all a film about spies, deception, and the way it all affects the war.
Harakiri (The Criterion Collection)Harakiri (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $23.08 / Used from: $13.25
31. **** It counts! Seppuku, the long questioned and fatal consequence of the samurai, is dissected, explored, and criticized is explored in this very compelling and beautifully done drama.
