The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.23
The most spectacular film of the year. The acting is superb, the sets are fabulous, and the special effects are to die for. Simply put, this is a movie unlike anything you've ever seen before or hence. This is the way filmmaking should be.
In BrugesIn Bruges
Buy new: $6.82 / Used from: $1.19
A film that defies all expectations, this dramedy/action/mob-hit is also the best pseudo-foreign film of the year. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are great in their roles. Farrell's character inquires what there is to do in Bruges and the answer couldn't be clearer - there's a lot of entertainment to be had in front of the screen.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (Widescreen & Full Screen Edition)Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (Widescreen & Full Screen Edition)
Buy new: $6.52 / Used from: $0.43
The most underrated movie of the year, this film didn't even have the fortune of securing a wide release in U.S. theaters. It's hard to market such a film because it doesn't mold into any preset category. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't the most enjoyable film and the one that you can imagine watching over and over.
Vicky Cristina BarcelonaVicky Cristina Barcelona
Buy new: $5.06 / Used from: $2.21
This marks Woody Allen's return to top form and is an intriguing look at modern culture and present notion of relationships and the boundaries within them.
Slumdog MillionaireSlumdog Millionaire
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.59
This film has one of the most creative concepts of putting the story together. The cinematography in this film is breathtaking, the performances are all well-rounded, and the story is heartfelt and emotional without purposefully pulling on heartstrings.
Burn After ReadingBurn After Reading
Buy new: $6.09 / Used from: $0.24
The latest Coen release is a hilarious romp that makes fun of everything and anything and gives Brad Pitt the role of his life. Pitt finally proves that he can act beyond being the leading man, the handsome face that we've known he could be since Thelma and Louise.
Iron Man (Single-Disc Edition)Iron Man (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.60
It might be a comic book movie adaptation, but it is also the most fun to have been had at the movies in 2008. And it finally proves, once and for all, what was clear ages ago - really good actors can make any film spectacular. For his share, Robert Downey Jr. makes Iron Man the ultimate guilty pleasure, and in turn, this film makes him a bona fide $20 million/per film Hollywood star.
How to Lose Friends and Alienate PeopleHow to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Buy new: $10.69 / Used from: $1.57
A film that makes fun of the industry that made it, but still manages to have an enormous heart.
Ghost TownGhost Town
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.73
This film includes three very underrated performances from Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, and Tea Leoni.
Frost/NixonFrost/Nixon
Buy new: $4.65 / Used from: $0.02
It's a good film with very strong performances; relying on those performances to make the film really dramatic. As enlightening as the movie is though, it never crosses into the realm of entertainment and is hardly the type of movie one would watch more than once.
PenelopePenelope
Buy new: $7.29 / Used from: $3.12
This is an honorable mention (#11) because Penelope carries the "made in 2006" sticker. It wasn't released in theaters (or otherwise) in the U.S. until this year. Another film that was mismarketed, this modern-day fairytale is charming and heartfelt and has a great message to boot.
