Just when I thought K-S is going down as the coolest film of the year, here comes Scott Pilgrim, the love child of Juno and Speed Racer. It celebrates everything geeky under the sun: indie garage rock, video games, comic books and Kung Fu. Our titular hero does not own a cell phone. What’s up with that? 9/10

Losers is an action film that does not disappoint true genre fans. Its fun fast brutal actions and colorful characters more than compensate for a paper thin storyline. It deserved much better box office reception. Bring on the sequels! 8/10

The director of last year's surprise hit Taken is back with this actioner. FPWL is less emotionally satisfying than Taken. There are enough fight and shoot out scenes in its second act to warrant at least a rental. FPWL also has John Travolta in his most ferocious role since Face/Off. Hopefully, he will reprise it in a sequel. 8/10

ISTD is a thrilling cat and mouse game between a cop and a serial killer who tortured and chopped the cop’s fiancé to pieces. It may be a thriller. It has plenty of brutal fist fights and graphic torture scenes. It is the Silence of the Lambs on steroid. 9/10

Frozen offers a simple premise, real life scenario, three likeable leads, snappy dialogs and maximum tension. It explores our common fright of heights, sub zero cold, entrapment and wolves. The film is only marred by an uneventful ending. By then it has run out of materials and bodies. The 90 minute featurette on the filming experience is well worth one’s while. Did I mention wolves? 9/10

It is wrong to dismiss LMI as a “remake.” The “original” Swedish version is merely a book adaptation…no originality to begin with. Just because the Swedes'd done it 2 years before is not ground enough to stigmatize LMI. Except for the silly CGI attack shots, LMI is visually mesmerizing and bone chilling. Two attractive & talented leads wring every last drop of pathos out of their roles. 8/10

Haley is brutal & nasty...as menacing as Englund in WC's New Nightmare. His humor is of sinister nature…not to be laughed at. Minor story changes better explain why the kids are haunted by the same boogie man. The final Freddy/Nancy fight is better orchestrated. But, the pacing is too fast, so is the editing in scare/action scenes. The overuse of jump scares gets irksome after a while. 8/10

Raising a child is hard enough. Imagine raising a human/animal hybrid. The most fascinating aspect of Splice is how the little nuclear family dynamics (“mother” to child and “father” to child relations) change over time. Splice may not be a thrill a minute. It disturbs in some primal subconscious level. 8/10

Part 2 is a notch or two below the original, as expected. The story moves much faster here than in part 1. Actions start 20 minutes into it. The movie does not intend to be any more than a genre picture. Much of the story and the ending are hence formulaic. Actions are still there although the well lit stage sets/caves and a few too fake CG shots reduce scare factor substantially. 8/10

DM lacks the emotional complexity of Toy Story. It is however a super fun 3D experience. Unlike other 3D movies which is essentially a giant box, DM utilizes the third dimension to bring characters tantalizingly close to the audience. 9/10

How To packs more adrenaline pumping actions than the average “action” films (i.e. Iron Man 2, Predators, & etc.) out there nowadays. It does so without compromising the story and intimate character moments. 8/10

WS2 lacks the psychological complexity, dramatic power and infinitely quotable dialogs in the original. It makes it up with its timeliness and relevance to the present day financial crisis, and some remarkable philosophical insights into the nature of greed and its widespread consequences. A better focus on Gordon's comeback would have served the story better. 8/10
