![]() | Kick-Ass
Buy new: $9.53 / Used from: $2.14 K-S gives comic book films a rich blood transfusion (literally)! It counter balances the uber-serious The Dark Knight and Watchmen, making "superheroes" cool again. Beneath its glitter, it is as much of a creative deconstruction of superhero mythos (i.e. Spider-Man, Batman and Robin) as the two titles mentioned above. 9/10

![]() | Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.49 Just when I thought K-S is going down as the coolest film of the year, here comes Scott Pilgrim, the love child of Juno and Speed Racer. It celebrates everything geeky under the sun: indie garage rock, video games, comic books and Kung Fu. Our titular hero does not own a cell phone. Whats up with that? 9/10
![]() | The Expendables
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.82 80s action icon is back again to show the world actions done old school. Although TE may not be as grand as the trailer suggests it, and the bone crushing fights are often marred by quick sloppy editing, it does make a great companion piece to Rambo. Save both for a guys night in. 9/10
![]() | The Losers
Buy new: $7.19 / Used from: $2.88 Losers is an action film that does not disappoint true genre fans. Its fun fast brutal actions and colorful characters more than compensate for a paper thin storyline. It deserved much better box office reception. Bring on the sequels! 8/10
![]() | Salt (Deluxe Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.33 Angelina is back in her butt kicking mode. Salt is her show through and through. The story is easier to follow than the Bourne movies, actions are just as exciting. 8/10
![]() | From Paris with Love
Buy new: $7.80 / Used from: $2.25 The director of last year's surprise hit Taken is back with this actioner. FPWL is less emotionally satisfying than Taken. There are enough fight and shoot out scenes in its second act to warrant at least a rental. FPWL also has John Travolta in his most ferocious role since Face/Off. Hopefully, he will reprise it in a sequel. 8/10
![]() | Green Zone
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.09 Unlike the Bourne movies, this Greengrass and Damon collaboration works in a larger historical context that has something substantial at stake, namely the reason for the recent US "invasion" in Iraq. GZ is an intelligent thriller, that keeps viewers engaged even though the conspiracy is quite obvious from the get go. It beats the vastly overrated The Hurt Locker in my book. 8/10
![]() | I Saw the Devil
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.71 ISTD is a thrilling cat and mouse game between a cop and a serial killer who tortured and chopped the cops fiancé to pieces. It may be a thriller. It has plenty of brutal fist fights and graphic torture scenes. It is the Silence of the Lambs on steroid. 9/10
![]() | The Loved Ones (2009) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - United Kingdom ]
Buy used from: $24.99 TLO is an outstanding low budget horror film from the down under in the vein of Texas Chainsaw movies. It is a story about a guy saying no to a wrong girls invitation to school dance. The girl had the guy kidnapped to exact her vengeance. Sheer madness follows. The last 30 minutes are so intense that I was literally jumping out of my seat and yelling get her
get her! 9/10
![]() | Frozen
Buy new: $7.23 / Used from: $3.89 Frozen offers a simple premise, real life scenario, three likeable leads, snappy dialogs and maximum tension. It explores our common fright of heights, sub zero cold, entrapment and wolves. The film is only marred by an uneventful ending. By then it has run out of materials and bodies. The 90 minute featurette on the filming experience is well worth ones while. Did I mention wolves? 9/10
![]() | The Human Centipede
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.00 Creators of THC took a simple (if slightly gimmicky) idea and executed it wonderfully. Medically accurate or not, there are loads of suspense and thrills to be had. This is low budget horror at its finest. 9/10
![]() | Let Me In
Buy new: $6.73 / Used from: $2.23 It is wrong to dismiss LMI as a remake. The original Swedish version is merely a book adaptation
no originality to begin with. Just because the Swedes'd done it 2 years before is not ground enough to stigmatize LMI. Except for the silly CGI attack shots, LMI is visually mesmerizing and bone chilling. Two attractive & talented leads wring every last drop of pathos out of their roles. 8/10
![]() | Night of the Demons
Buy new: $8.75 / Used from: $2.34 Night is possibly the funnest Halloween treat this year. The goth punk rock soundtrack alone would get it on any horror fans recommend list. It is not without flaws. The hyperactive camera moves and flashy editing are distracting and unnerving. The climax is too quick. It feels as though the editor lost a couple minutes of footages. 8/10
![]() | A Nightmare on Elm Street
Buy new: $7.22 / Used from: $1.45 Haley is brutal & nasty...as menacing as Englund in WC's New Nightmare. His humor is of sinister nature
not to be laughed at. Minor story changes better explain why the kids are haunted by the same boogie man. The final Freddy/Nancy fight is better orchestrated. But, the pacing is too fast, so is the editing in scare/action scenes. The overuse of jump scares gets irksome after a while. 8/10
![]() | Piranha
Buy new: $6.13 / Used from: $1.49 Piranha may not be Ajas finest hour. It is yet another fun filled remake of 80s horror classic. Rumor has it that it is the bloodiest film in history. If true, that alone should put it on any horror fan's best of 2010 list. The ending feels too abrupt. They have to start the sequel at where this one ends i.e. big Piranha gone airborne. 8/10
![]() | Splice
Buy new: $8.73 / Used from: $1.25 Raising a child is hard enough. Imagine raising a human/animal hybrid. The most fascinating aspect of Splice is how the little nuclear family dynamics (mother to child and father to child relations) change over time. Splice may not be a thrill a minute. It disturbs in some primal subconscious level. 8/10
![]() | The Crazies
Buy new: $8.83 / Used from: $1.56 Crazies features two to three of the scariest scenes in horror this year. It may not be as emotionally charged as, say, 28 Weeks Later. It is nonetheless a visceral experience that the best of its kind delivers. 8/10
![]() | The Descent: Part 2
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $5.70 Part 2 is a notch or two below the original, as expected. The story moves much faster here than in part 1. Actions start 20 minutes into it. The movie does not intend to be any more than a genre picture. Much of the story and the ending are hence formulaic. Actions are still there although the well lit stage sets/caves and a few too fake CG shots reduce scare factor substantially. 8/10
![]() | Toy Story 3
Buy new: $19.72 / Used from: $6.84 TS3 triumphantly concludes the saga of everyone's favorite onscreen toys. What a killer ending! It strikes an emotional chord the way only Pixar can, and brings joyful tears to the audience. 9/10
![]() | Despicable Me (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.03 DM lacks the emotional complexity of Toy Story. It is however a super fun 3D experience. Unlike other 3D movies which is essentially a giant box, DM utilizes the third dimension to bring characters tantalizingly close to the audience. 9/10
![]() | Megamind (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $14.54 / Used from: $4.69 Megamind is the second supervillain story of the year. Its play on the theme of good and evil is enough to make Mark Millar and Alan Moores heads spin. It is accessible to kids and fun for adults. 8/10
![]() | How to Train Your Dragon (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $13.16 / Used from: $6.20 How To packs more adrenaline pumping actions than the average action films (i.e. Iron Man 2, Predators, & etc.) out there nowadays. It does so without compromising the story and intimate character moments. 8/10
![]() | Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $4.15 Percy is a young adult adventure book adaptation done right...finally. The movie packs plenty of light humor and non stop exciting actions. Its smart integration of ancient Greek myths in modern day beats the Clash of the Titans by a mile. 8/10
![]() | Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Buy new: $12.73 / Used from: $1.75 WS2 lacks the psychological complexity, dramatic power and infinitely quotable dialogs in the original. It makes it up with its timeliness and relevance to the present day financial crisis, and some remarkable philosophical insights into the nature of greed and its widespread consequences. A better focus on Gordon's comeback would have served the story better. 8/10
![]() | Black Swan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.92 Black Swan is surely Aronofskys most mature, sophisticated and polished work to date though it carries over some main themes from his directorial debut "Pi": obsession and madness. It is also an insightful probe into the idea of doubles and opposites: black vs. white, good vs evil, light vs. dark, technique vs. passion, innocence vs. sexuality, and etc. 9/10.
