The latest bro-mance from team Apatow (the guys who brought us Superbad, Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Pineapple Express is the story of Dale Denton (Seth Rogan) and Saul Silver (James Franco), a pothead and his dealer who accidently get caught up in a drug war between two gangs with some corrupt cops, high-school girls and small-time henchmen thrown in for good measure. At its core, Pineapple Express is a stoner comedy--a tale of two semi-slow giggling and loveable idiots in way over their heads--this formula has made for some entertaining comedy over the years, Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke and Dave Chappell's Half Baked being two of the best examples. What sets Pineapple Express apart from these silly classics however, is the consistency of the humor, the perfect chemistry between Rogan and Franco and the giddily ridiculous action sequences (and the fact that even mild intoxication is not required to enjoy the humor). The movie retains the sweetness that is present in most of Apatow's films, making the characters’ poor choices and ultra-violent actions somehow justifiable, or at least relatable. The site gags, pop-culture references and perfectly timed non-sequiturs only enhance the hilarity. Director David Gordon Green, known mostly for the understated and reflective films George Washington and All the Real Girls, seemed like an odd choice for such a raucous and over-the-top comedy, but it turns out Green's stamp is all over this film (as is his long-time cinematographer, Tim Orr) who together manage to turn Pineapple Express into much more than the sum of its parts. --Kira Canny

Decent if unspectacular comedy3
The ubiquitous Seth Rogen stars in yet another comedy, which is fine with me. Unlike a lot of comedies, this one actually delivers laughs. It's not hysterically funny, and there was less comedy than I would like. But, at least there were some funny bits. "Pineapple Express" suffers the same flaw as most comedies, in that it's too long. (I didn't watch the longer director's cut version, opting instead for the theatrical version.) 90 minutes is the magic number for a comedy; you had better have a good excuse for going over. This film did not. Chopping about 20 minutes out of this would have improved it immensely.

Seth Rogen plays himself, as always, and he's good at it. James Franco was fantastic, and his Golden Globe nomination was well-deserved. Ed Begley, Jr. got to play a character out of his normal range, and was really the comedic star of this film in the few scenes he was in.

As my wife perceptively noted, we were not the target demographic for this movie. I suspect a younger group would enjoy it more. Nonetheless, it's a least worth a rent, particularly if you don't go into it with high expectations.

Funniest Movie I've Seen In A Long Time5
Saw this movie in the theater, and it was funny the whole way through. In my opinion, it wasn't like a normal pot movie, where people that don't smoke wouldn't enjoy it, it is funny for pretty much anyone. It's stupid funny sometimes, dark humor other times, smart and stupid, action and drama (a little bit), but all around hilarious. I laughed so hard I cried, and I felt it for days after--quite the ab workout! Definitely worth the money!

Blu-Ray Issues?4
Just got this for Blu-Ray. Wouldn't start on my PS3 at all. It would get to the puffs of smoke and then reset, infinitely.

The fix for me was pretty easy. I just turned off Blu-Ray internet connection. Once I did that, it started up with no problem.

As far as the Blu-Ray is concerned, it's a basic comedy movie. There's really no reason to pick this up on Blu-Ray if you already have it in DVD. It's nice to have it look crisp and clear, but there's no need to double-dip.

As far as the content goes, I really enjoyed this movie. It's better the first time around. I've found that with each viewing some scenes lose their humor, but all-in-all, it's still a very hilarious movie. Keep in mind that this is a stoner comedy. You may not be into this if you're not into goofy, stoner humor. You've been warned.
