I love love love love this movie. An awesome thrill-ride that you don't need to completely understand to enjoy, yet it gives you plenty to puzzle over. Inception is the must see movie of 2010. Chris Nolan moves higher among the ranks of my favorite filmmakers.
The Social Network (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]The Social Network (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.14
The most gripping, thrilling movie of the year has no special effects and just a bunch of nerdy guys talking a lot. Absolutely among 2010's very best movies. Not to be missed.
Enter the VoidEnter the Void
Buy new: $7.27 / Used from: $7.14
Gaspar Noé's latest film is an indescribable experience. It's hard to watch, it's excessive and has no commercial appeal whatsoever... but it's a staggering work of art by a visionary filmmaker. Not a perfect film, but truly unforgettable.
Blue ValentineBlue Valentine
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.00
A raw, powerful drama that is uncomfortable and painful. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling are brilliant in this gut-wrenching portrait of a failed marriage.
Toy Story 3 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)Toy Story 3 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $25.97 / Used from: $9.99
Pixar does their beloved characters justice in this excellent third installment of the franchise. It's just wonderful. A very nearly perfect film.
I Saw the DevilI Saw the Devil
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.72
A brutal, intense and gripping thriller which literally had me on the edge of my seat for most of its running time. This film redefines the term "ultraviolent". It is very hard to watch, but Kim Ji-Woon's revenge thriller is nearly a masterpiece.
Kick-AssKick-Ass
Buy new: $9.53 / Used from: $2.14
A superhero movie for the 21st century. A wild, exhilirating, ultraviolent take on the superhero genre. Funny, exciting, at times disturbing. Guaranteed to be a cult classic.
Rabbit HoleRabbit Hole
Buy new: $12.14 / Used from: $2.71
John Cameron Mitchell directs this wonderful film based on the play by David Lindsay-Abaire. It remains refreshingly free of cliches and best of all it never attempts to force an emotional response from the audience. No cheap sentiment, just genuine emotion and two great performances by Kidman and Eckhart.
True GritTrue Grit
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $2.96
Excellent adaptation (not remake) by Joel and Ethan Coen. An exciting, funny and very beautiful film with amazing photography by Roger Deakins and some really great performances. Another Coen Brothers triumph.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the WorldScott Pilgrim vs. the World
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.49
Just thinking about this movie puts a smile on my face. Movie number three from director Edgar Wright is a homerun. One of the most unique, original and entertaining movies of the year. If you're at all geeky and love comics and videogames, get this now!!
127 Hours127 Hours
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.78
Great psychological drama very well directed by Danny Boyle. The film really puts you in the head of the main character and ends up quite touching. Tour-de-force performance by Franco as well.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 [Blu-ray]Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.27 / Used from: $7.00
Bloody brilliant. It's only half of a story and has no ending, but Deathly Hallows Part 1 is still one of the best movies I've seen this year. It's beautiful, emotional, immaculately conceived and filmed. Bring on Part 2!
The RunawaysThe Runaways
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.59
Very good bio of '70s all-girl rock band The Runaways. The flick covers very familiar ground but boasts an outstanding performance by Kristen Stewart.
The FighterThe Fighter
Buy new: $12.18 / Used from: $2.94
Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg are both truly award worthy in this mesmerizing drama directed by David O. Russell. The Fighter doesn't really break any new ground when it comes to boxing dramas but it's so well made all around that it's simply a must see.
The Ghost WriterThe Ghost Writer
Buy new: $11.63 / Used from: $1.04
Excellent thriller from Roman Polanski. A good story, lots of suspense and some Hitchcockian humor.
Black SwanBlack Swan
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.92
Darren Aronofsky's mysterious thriller about an obsessed ballerina in a production of Swan Lake. I wasn't totally won over by it the first time, but Aronofsky's work always deepens with multiple viewings. A fascinating film.
The TownThe Town
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.93
Excellent crime drama/thriller directed by and starring Ben Affleck. A great cast including Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall, a good story and tight direction make this one of the best crime films of recent years.
Never Let Me GoNever Let Me Go
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $8.03
A beautiful and haunting film that is guaranteed to elicit an emotional response. Don't miss it, but be warned: it is not a happy movie.
Shutter IslandShutter Island
Buy new: $9.73 / Used from: $2.43
An excellent psychological thriller from Martin Scorsese. Shutter Island is a fascinating thrill ride which gets deeper and more enjoyable after multiple viewings.
The SquareThe Square
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $2.40
Excellent noir thriller from Australia. Very, very dark but thrilling and well-made. Reminiscent of the Coens' Blood Simple.
Let Me InLet Me In
Buy new: $6.73 / Used from: $2.23
American remake of Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In. Definitely one of the best horror remakes of the decade and worth watching for Chloe Grace Moretz alone, but I still prefer the Swedish original.
The Girl With the Dragon TattooThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Buy new: $10.24 / Used from: $7.98
Excellent Swedish thriller based on the hugely popular book. It's a truly exciting and suspenseful mystery with interesting characters and a great story. David Fincher-helmed American remake in the works.
The Girl Who Played With FireThe Girl Who Played With Fire
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.99
The second part of the Millenium Trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire is nearly as good as the first part. The acting by Noomi Rapace is wonderful and her character is fascinating.
A ProphetA Prophet
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $5.35
A very good French crime drama. Goodfellas in a French prison... sort of. I certainly enjoyed A Prophet, but I wasn't bowled over by it. I still highly recommend it to all lovers of foreign cinema.
Cyrus [Blu-ray]Cyrus [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.93
Dark comedy from mumblecore veteran Jay Duplass. A very funny and insightful script and enjoyable performanes by the three actors.
Get LowGet Low

A movie with Robert Duvall and Bill Murray together? Sign me up! This is a really enjoyable film that really makes me want to see Duvall onscreen more often.
The AmericanThe American
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $0.10
Very good, subdued performance by George Clooney in this drama-thriller. Clooney is an American in Italy, a lonely man on a mysterious mission. I liked it a lot.
Winter's BoneWinter's Bone
Buy new: $7.28 / Used from: $4.95
A very good drama-thriller with an award-worthy performance by Jennifer Lawrence.
Get Him to the Greek (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Get Him to the Greek (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.48
Best comedy of the year. Russell Brand returns as Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Aldous Snow. Lots of laughs. Lots of fun.
FrozenFrozen
Buy new: $7.23 / Used from: $3.89
The best horror movie of 2010. A very intense, suspenseful and frightening film.
GreenbergGreenberg
Buy new: $12.40 / Used from: $0.79
A fine performance from Ben Stiller in this quite good comedy-drama from director Noah Baumbach. Greenberg is not a totally likable character, but fascinating nonetheless.
The CraziesThe Crazies
Buy new: $8.83 / Used from: $1.56
The 2nd best horror film of 2010. An exciting intense remake of George Romero's 1973 which is, I must say, better than the original.
PiranhaPiranha
Buy new: $6.13 / Used from: $1.49
About as good a movie about man-eating piranha as you're likely to see. Crammed to the hilt with gore and nudity, but missing the great B-movie cast of Joe Dante's 1978 original.

A good character comedy from Nicole Holofcener. I love Catherine Keener. I will watch her in anything. The other actors are quite good too namely Oliver Platt and Rebecca Hall. A good but subtle film.
